Distance To Spot Ratio

This describes the size of the area being measured and its relationship to the distance of the thermometer from the measured surface. For example, a D:S ratio of 8 to 1, would measure a 1-inch area at a distance of 8 inches.

Infrared thermometers, also called infrared pyrometers or laser thermometers, read the temperature of a surface by measuring the infrared radiation emitted from the object. Their accuracy is determined by the distance-to-spot (D:S) ratio which dictates how the measured area grows as the distance to the object increases.
