What Are My Options for Enclosure Design?There are two basic motor enclosure types: Open and Totally Enclosed. Choosing the right enclosure design depends on your application.

Open enclosures have a vented design that allows air circulation for cooling, while preventing liquids and debris from falling onto the motor components. They're generally used for clean, dry, indoor applications.

Totally Enclosed enclosures block the exchange of air between the areas inside and outside the motor. Some include an internal cooling fan. They're suitable for use in damp, dirty, corrosive environments.

Motor Service Factor

What is Motor Service Factor?When your motor is operating within the correct voltage tolerances, Service Factor (SF) represents the percentage of overloading the motor can handle for short periods.

SF allows cooler winding temperatures at rated load, protects against intermittent heat increases, and helps you estimate horsepower requirements. It can also compensate for low or unbalanced supply voltages.

Operation at service factor load for extended periods can reduce motor speed, life, and efficiency. Do not use the service factor capability to carry the load on a continuous basis.

What is HP?Horsepower (HP) is a measurement of a motor's output power. It is normally listed as HP on the motor's nameplate.

Farm Duty AC Motors

Farm-duty AC motors, also known as agricultural fan motors, have a high starting torque that allows them to start under large loads. They provide reliable service in dirty and rough environments and are commonly used for crop drying, running poultry equipment, manure pumps, augers, and conveyors. Motors have enclosures that help protect them from moisture, but they are not airtight or waterproof.
