Raw materials are metal and nonmetal products available in various shapes and sizes for use in building, manufacturing, packaging, and more. Metals conduct heat, electricity, and can be shaped and formed into different shapes and sizes for specific applications. Plastics are used for packaging, parts fabrication, and wear strips. Fibreglass and carbon fibre composites are an alternative to metal where a nonconductive material is needed. Rubber is often used to seal and protect underlying materials. Cork, felt, and foam supply sound insulation, cushioning, gasketing, and underlays. Wire mesh has a surface pattern that allows air and liquids to pass through but traps objects for precise filtering and straining applications. Fabric is widely used for textiles and packaging. Ceramic forms heat-resistant, friction-reducing parts. Graphite does not stick to metal surfaces and is lightweight and durable. It resists chemicals and exposure to elevated temperatures.
